When facing off versus Zerg, all non-Zerg opponents must protect against a zergling rush. I know I’ve lost countless times against a quick pool and lots of zerglings. As a Terran or Protoss player, when your opponent is Zerg you must wall off your ramp. If zerglings get into your mineral line early, the game is over. All Zerg players must learn a strategy to deal with the walling strategy. The good news for Zerg players, is that there’s a perfect opening build order designed specifically to break through an opponent’s wall, the 5 roach rush.
5 Roach Rush – Zerg Build Order
- 9 Overlord
- 13 Spawning Pool
- 13 Gas
- 15 Overlord
- 15 Zergling
- 16 Queen
- 18 Roach Warren
- 19 Metabolic Boost
- 19 5 Roaches
There are a few critical points to remember to succeed with this build. The two zerglings produced at supply 15 must kill your opponents scout. Once the scout is killed, build your roach warren. If your roach warren is scouted, your opponent will start producing stalkers or marauders to kill your roaches before they breach the wall.
Once your roach warren is started you will research metabolic boost, which turns zerglings into speedlings. This is critical to the success of the build. Roaches are only intended to break the wall down. The speedlings should do all of the damage.
5 Roach Rush – Strategy
You should be producing drones until the roach warren is ready, other than your two zerglings. After you’ve made the five roaches, send them to your opponents base and start making speedlings. The speedlings should have rally point set to the opponents base, and with the speed upgrade shouldn’t be far behind the roaches.
Once your roaches reach the opponents base, start attacking the weakest point in the wall to bust open a hole. If you’re playing against Protoss go for the zealots blocking the path, followed by any pylons. If you’re playing against Terran go for the supply depot, scv’s repairing buildings and marines.
After the roaches bust a hole through the defenses, send in the speedlings. The speedlings should target any army that is left if the army is weak. If the army is strong go for the mineral line to cripple the economy.
This strategy is not always a death blow and transitions very well into the middle stages of a game. Just throw down a hatchery at your natural expansion after you send out your zerglings. If you can’t deal a death blow, start pumping out drones to gain an overwhelming economic edge over your opponent.
